 Background

Hello, my name is Faiez Kirsten and I am a medical doctor. Now you may immediately wonder why a

doctor would write a book on organizational or corporate culture. Well, the reason is that several years ago

I had an extremely negative career experience while working in a corporation and it is this experience which

prompted me to write this book. Now I will not bore you with all the details of this experience. However if you

are interested in the background to this nasty experience then you are welcome to  contact me

In any case my decision to join the corporation was not the best decision I've ever made. And probably

ranks amongst the worst of them.

Why?

Because that decision completely changed the course of my life! However not entirely in a bad way since

despite the many negative experiences I have had as a result of that decision many positive ones flowed

from it also. For example I have learnt much from that negative experience in the company and grown

personally more than what I had thought possible. I also moved on to live and work abroad, worked on

cruise ships (what a great experience!) and had many other good experiences following that nasty

corporate experience.

"So what Dr. Kirsten?" I hear you ask. "Who cares about your bad

corporate experience?"

Fair enough. You are right. There is no need for you to care - unless you are interested in learning about the

importance of corporate culture and the risks and stresses associated with being a part of a dysfunctional or

weak culture.

Corporate Culture

Ok, so what was it about this company that caused me to encounter the problems I did while working

there? The answer of course is “Its culture.” How do I know this? Well, at the time I was in the process of

completing a post-graduate degree in business administration. And my research involved the subject of

corporate or organizational culture! So I had become very familiar with the subject. But more importantly

my research also involved one of the subsidiaries of the investment holding company. And my findings

were that the culture of this company was extremely weak or dysfunctional! So ultimately it was the

corporation’s weak culture which gave rise to my negative experience (and as my research uncovered, to

the negative experiences encountered by many other people working at this company at the time too).

Now my experience is a reflection of some of the problems that may be experienced in a company with a

weak or dysfunctional culture, problems such as poor communication or exclusion of key and relevant staff

members in decision-making processes for example. The sad reality is that companies with such cultures

are usually beset with numerous problems. In fact it would be fair to say that virtually all problems

experienced by the staff of an organization or corporation and which are related to their work can be placed

at the door of the weak or dysfunctional culture of their organization or corporation. And it does not matter

whether the workers or employees are part of the management staff or not. If they are experiencing

problems related to their work situation then it is highly likely that their problem is due to some weakness in

the culture of their organization or corporation.

If you have ever felt stressed out and unhappy or dissatisfied with your

work  situation then I'm sure you will know what I am talking about here.

About this Book

Alright, now before I go on to tell you what you can expect when you purchase this book, it is important to

know that it is about corporate culture in general. It is not about the details of my experience while

working at that corporation. Although my experience gave rise to the birth of this book, the book itself does

not delve into the finer details of my actual experience while working there. And as I've indicated if you

would like to know about the background to this experience then you can contact me

So, to reiterate, this book, “Not As Soft As You Think – What You Should Know About Organizational

Culture” is not about my experience while working at that company but rather provides its readers with a

broad overview of corporate culture and the various aspects related to it.

OK, so let me tell you what you can expect when you purchase “Not As Soft As You Think – What You

Should Know About Organizational Culture”.

Buy “Not As Soft As You Think – What You Should Know About Organizational

Culture” Today And Be One Step Ahead Of Most People In Understanding

What Your Company Is All About.

Reading “Not As Soft As You Think – What You Should Know About Organizational Culture” will

enhance your understanding of your company and its people. You will gain a greater insight into the

problems you may have been experiencing at your place of work and perhaps then be in a better position to

solve them more effectively. Reading this book will reveal the following to you:

  1. Types of Culture - This book provides you with a description of the various types of cultures ranging from the destructive to those which value their people highly and enhance performance. You will go on a journey with a job-hopping character as he moves from one company to another in search of the ideal one which can provide him with job satisfaction and happiness.
  2. Components of Culture - You will get know about the individual parts or components of culture, how they impact on you and your performance and also the overall performance of your company. This is vitally important information since once you become familiar with it, it will become obvious to you what aspects of your company need strengthening. Continuing to work in a company whose culture consists of one or more weak components can stress you out or pose a serious risk to your health, wellness and performance.
  3. Origin and Maintenance of Culture - You will also get to know how your company’s culture originated. In other words how it got to be that your company does things the way it does and who were ultimately responsible for the problems and failures your company has experienced or for the successes it has enjoyed. And you will get to know how companies go about retaining their particular type of culture.
  4. Culture and Financial Performance - What is the reason that your company is not as profitable as what you or its owners and leaders think it should be? Or maybe it is not profitable at all but has suffered a loss? What has caused this? On the other hand perhaps it is enjoying great profits! What is the underlying reason for this? One of the major factors that influences how well or poorly a company performs financially is its culture. This book explains how this happens.
  5. Culture – Can it be Good or Bad? - This may sound like a strange question but it is not. I’ll tell you why.
  6. Managing Culture - It is commonly believed by most company managers and leaders that managing or changing their  company’s culture is a very difficult task. I explain how companies usually manage their cultures and why it is historically regarded as a challenge

This book will help you to:

  • Get clear on what corporate or organizational culture actually is or how it is defined. Surprisingly many people, including company managers do not understand this aspect of their organizations to the extent that they should.
  • Get an ‘insider’s view’ of corporate culture from someone who has not only researched the subject in-depth but has also had first-hand experience of working in a corporation with a weak culture.
  • Take a journey with a job-hopping character and share his cultural experiences as he moves from company to company. You may even identify with some of his experiences.
  • Understand why you feel that you don’t “fit in” with the company you work for – or why you do.
  • Feel what it would be like to work for an exceptionally high-performing company as you are shown each of the components which make up a corporation or organization’s culture. The description of this company will enable you to easily see where your company’s strengths and weaknesses lay.
  • Understand more fully how the behavior and actions of important people in the early days of your company’s existence still influences how it does things today.
  • Understand what all those team-building exercises and other similar or related activities that you are expected to participate in are all about.
  • Understand why your financial manager or director is a happy or miserable person with respect to his or her work performance.
  • Understand why you are not being paid the amount of money you think you deserve – or why you are happy with the salary or wages that you earn.
  • Understand why your company is resisting the important changes it needs to make in order to fit in with our rapidly changing world.
  • Understand why many people, including yourself perhaps, suffer from work-related stress.

And much, much more………The list is long.

Testimonials, Feedback and Commentary

Below  is feedback received from a reader of an article I wrote on organizational culture. Information contained in the article

was extracted from this book.

I loved your last article.  My husband is currently working under a management structure where there  the conflict is not

met and resolved, but conflict is denied.  When they received a new boss,
he said he wanted to include the

programmers in making the decisions, but he rarely makes opportunity for that to happen and ultimately his decisions

are made by who he needs to make happy above him in in rank. There is a lack of trust between management and

employees. A couple of people have been up and fired from what others perceive as the boss saying "they just weren't

on board" with the way things need to go around here.  There is not good communication from the manager to discuss

how things are moving or not moving in the business and one of the biggest lacks in the working day is the boss' lack of

support. The people who work at this business have a tendency to be workaholics who do not have very good self images

and no matter how hard they work and fine tune things, they are not getting supported by their boss, but actually are being

 undermined.  Eeeeek!

I am going to send this article to my husband and get his feedback.  It says nothing he hasn't seen, but all the info. he has

been seeing is written down in the article in one place affirming how he's been feeling about work. I realize him being

there is much about how he sees himself and his own spiritual growth.

Thanks again so much for the article.

Kate

In this assessment of personnel management in the corporate environment Dr Faiez Kirsten explores a variety of

hypothetical businesses and the interaction of his long-suffering main character and common man J.E. as he struggles to

fit in to their rigid structures.

After a what seems like a pilgrim's progress through a minefield of organizations which are more concerned with their

regimented concepts of systems and authority than getting the best out of their staff, he eventually arrives in the promised

land of HAND - Highly Advanced Network Developers, where his talents, which have been honed along the way, are finally

appreciated for what they are and he is at last able to become an optimally productive and fulfilled member of the

organization.

The basics of effective corporate personnel structure are outlined through the analysis of a fictional company, HIPERCO

(High Performance  Corporation Ltd)  where a culture of self-worth and careful selection of the appropriate personality for

a specific position allows for the worker to perform at his/her best and as a consequence become highly productive,

which eventually translates into good company profitability.

The business of managing groups of people has long been fraught with complex issues of human expectation,

self-esteem, value related compensation, emotional personality interaction and no-one yet seems to have arrived at a

perfect solution, so this thesis into company psychology is a good start in trying to clear the pitfalls and trying to find the

clear path to a successful company culture.

The end quote "I would sooner manage the finances of a company than manage its people. Numbers are much more

cooperative and adopt values easily."  perfectly encapsulates the problems faced.

"So What Is This Book Going To Cost Me?" you ask
